Design the Perfect Entrance to your Home

The entrance to your home is one of the most important parts of your property. Not only should it provide a welcoming feeling for you, the homeowner, it’s also the first thing visitors see – and first impressions count!

Make sure the entrance to your home is welcoming to guests, while reflecting your personal taste. It should make you feel comfortable and happy as soon as you walk in. The entrance sets the mood for the rest of your home’s interior.

There are simple touches that anyone can do to create the space of your dreams, even if it’s a relatively small area. Don’t treat your entrance way like an afterthought, when it should be one of the most important parts of your home.

What should you include?

Some of the main fixtures you can include in your home’s entrance are chairs, mirrors and lights. A lot of people don’t consider the relevance of including a chair in the porch or hallway. After all, you don’t expect guests to sit out there, but somewhere to sit gives you a convenient place to put on or take off your shoes. You can sit in peace to check the mail there. If you choose a bench, you can use it as a storage solution too. Use a trunk design, with a padded seat, so you can put shoes, coats, umbrellas or any clutter inside.

If you need more storage space, add a dresser, a table with drawers, or a chest to help you keep the entrance tidy and provide a space for items such as keys – which are prone to going missing if they don’t have their own regular spot!

Another tip is to use mirrors to open up a tight space by reflecting the light. This can work particularly well if your front door has glass panels. When you angle the mirror opposite the source of light, it gives the effect of doubling the space by reflecting any natural brightness in the area.

Artificial lighting is also important in what can be a dingy area of the home. One interior design tip is to layer the lighting. In what is normally a relatively small space, a stunning table lamp, lantern and sconce lighting can create different effects for different moods.

Entrance art

In many homes, the entrance hall is small, but you can still make a big statement. If you want your home to be bold and chic, or tranquil and calming, decorate the porch or hall accordingly. Add wallpaper or paint to reflect your personality.

Whether you choose paint in a muted, neutral shade, or brightly-pattered wallpaper to create a bold effect, this sets the mood. A statement mirror, plush stools and even a rug, if there’s enough space, will welcome you and your guests to a stylish home. Add a painting or two on the wall, or your favourite framed photos.

Follow your home’s style when you furnish the entrance and you can’t go far wrong. If your interior design has plenty of wood, rustic textures or ironware, use a mix of all the textures in the hall to set the tone.

With a little thought and planning, you can design the perfect entrance, so instead of it becoming simply an unused and neglected space, it can become a functional environment that welcomes everyone to the rest of your home.
